Chinese new year is basically lunar new year (to be politically correct). There are 28 days in a lunar month, so Chinese new year is always about a month or so later than the solar new year. I don't live in China, but my family is Chinese and we celebrate both new year's, though the lunar one gets a bigger celebration. Hope that helps. It's great that you want to learn more about other cultures =). Happy new year.

For some countries, you can receive red packets as long as you're not married, but for some as long as you're working, you have to give red packets. Chinese new year is for the chinese to visit friends and relatives' houses, give blessing with oranges and had feast. most of us would actually enjoy. cuz fer kids (like me, haha) gt red packets, food, can play cards and lots of tv shows. haha. its actually quite nice. if not why is chun so enjoying ? haha

Can I add one? Very curious... Does every family have to follow a certain tradition on Chinese New Year.. I don't mean all those reunion dinners or anything but... Like you can't wash your hair on New Years' and so on? That washing hair part is actually my friends' family tradition...

The stuff that enjoyce posted are all just superstitions... its not like you are gonna die if you wash your hair on Chinese New Year.

i dont follow the taboos like no washing of hair. i washed twice that day. haha. it is like after visiting allthe relatives, so many people in one house and you feel so sticky all over, and sweatings. cant live without washing the hair for one day lah.

not only you cannot scold, you cannot even curse. it's also not advisable to wear black ( best not to wear to your relative's house)
