Turning up the heat! Temperatures rose when FAHRENHEIT flew into town recently to perform at sell-out S.H.E.'s concert. Thom Toh catches up with the good- looking quartet over some makan. "is it hot in here, or is it just me?" i think to myself as Fahrenheit waltzes into Memoris (the latest dining outlet in Bugis Street), raising the temperature to boiling point. outside, it begins to rain cats and dogs, but diehard fahs huddle together to ogle at theior favourite band, tucking into some local show.
Thom: are we all set to order? Wu Zun: (Studying the menu) Let me see?? Is that laksa? Bubur chacha? Nasi lemak? Bak kut teh? See hum (thingyles) and kuay teow? Hey! You guys must try the bubur chacha! It's like sweet potato and yam in cocnut soup. Yummy yummy! Aaron: (Knitting his brows) What's the difference between bubur chacha and momo chacha? Wu Zun: (Widening his eyes) Duh! It's the same! Except momo chacha has crushed ice.
Talking about food, do you miss home cooking when you are away from home? All: Yes! Jiro: luckily for me, my mum prepares my lunchbox. It's the best food in the whole world because it??s made by mum! She knows what I like and what kind of nutritious food is good for me. Wu Zun: actually I'm not that particular about food. As comparison, Singapore food is very much like the ones found in Brunei. And when I am in Taiwan, I get to try out the famous lunchboxes. They have such a wide selection to choose from, so I think I get on by okay. Aaron: I'm not picky, just like Wu Zun. As long as the food is not too spicy, I'll be alright. Calvin: when I was in Canada, even when I didn't eat at home, I sampled a fair bit of Asian cuisine at restaurants. I could always find lots of dishes from all over, and I'd pick the Asian ones. You really get spoilt for choice. There's Vietnamese Tom Yam Goong, Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken and different kinds of satay!
Wu Zun was born and raised in Brunei. Calvin studied in Canada while Aaron spent his childhood in New York. Jiro is the only one who has deep roots in Taiwan. How do you guys gel so well, despite the differences? Wu Zun: We just look out for each other a lot. For example, when it comes to ordering food at a restaurant, they would normally be the ones responsible. My Chinese is okay and I can read the traditional script, albeit slowly. They are really fast though and can order things in a spilt second. Having said that, I have a major grouse (mock anger)! Calvin will always order more than he can eat. Calvin: I'm just being helpful, considerate and caring. Wu Zun: Aiyo! You are just being greedy! I remember I was sick once and he still ordered so much food! On recollection, I think he must have done it to torture me. I could only look at the food, which I couldn't eat! Calvin is so evil! (Laughs)
Now that you guys have seen and tasted a bit of Singapore, what are your thoughts? Jiro: the food is definitely delicious! (He waves to fans outside) they are very warm! Aaron: I see trees all around; it's really a garden city. Also, Singaporeans seem westernised while retaining their Asian heritage. And you guys are bilingual, and some even know a few languages! Calvin: I've heard so much about Singapore. A lot of my university classmates came to Singapore first before coming over to Canada. It's a great place for them to pick up English, while being able to converse in mandarin. As for me, I was probably braver and went straight to Canada. Now having seen Singapore for myself, I know they are right in saying how great Singapore is! Wu Zun: before I left for Taiwan, I was a model here for a month. But I was really new to the scene and not famous at all. Now, I have great memories of Singapore because I have a lot of good friends here.
What did you guys think of one another when you first met? Wu Zun: initially, I was the shy and quiet rookie in Taiwan and I didn't talk much to them. I remember how Calvin TOTALLY ignored me at a dinner. So I returned him that 'favour' and didn't talk to him either. He didn't know anybody but talked in that loud voice of his. (Laughs) Calvin: (With a innocent look) I was just being friendly! Aaron: When I first met Jiro, I told him, 'you need to work on your arms!' Later, I realized he had just come back from the gym. So that was a great blow to his ego! Jiro: Yes, I was so pissed! But thanks to him, I have since worked harder at the gym. As for Aaron, nothing and nobody can persuade him to work out in the gym. Aaron: when I first met Calvin, he was with this girl! Oops! (Lifts an eyebrow) but anyway, he has so many girlfriends, as everyone knows. He was wearing this windbreaker, which looked like it was stolen off the movie set of god of gamblers. Wu Zun: yes, and he would walk and turn, and let the coat tail do its dance in the wind, Aaron: (sarcastically) at least he was not shy and quiet! He was full of smiles. He was and still is the sunshine boy! Calvin: I first saw Wu Zun at the casting for the band. He was, as usual, trying to act cool. Wu Zun: I don't do that! Besides you didn't say 'hi' to me. Come on! I was new to Taiwan. He didn't even show me some hospitality. (Pauses for a second) now i get it! He was being so chummy with the others to show the rookie what a big brother he is!
Sounds like somebody is really unhappy about being slighted... Wu Zun: (laughs) if someone is shy, I will be too. If the other person is vivacious, I'd talk a lot more, but I'd never make first move. Maybe it's the way my culture is in Brunei. I just don't meet and greet. Although, this might mislead others thinking I'm aloof. Aaron: he's different from me. When I came back from US, I would wave at strangers from the bus. People would give me blank stares! Jiro: I alternate between being loud and quiet. But I'm not all out chummy. (Casts a side glance at Calvin) Calvin: please! With age, I have also toned down a lot. I can be very solemn too, you know. (A chorus of laughter ensues)
And the verdict on local food... Wu Zun: Everything is nice. The ketupat with satay gravy is fantastic! But I have to choose Hainanese chicken rice. I've had two packets of chicken rice today. I ate the stylist's share too, and here I am, with my third helping! Jiro: Fried carrot cake is the winner for me. It's really delicious. In Taiwan, you eat it plain. You guys have added eggs, crabmeat, onions and a whole lot of other secret ingredients! Aaron: The bubur chacha is really yummy. Everything else is equally superb, except for the spicy vadai and laksa. Calvin: Yes, full marks for everything except the vadai. And that's only because it is friend and too oily for my liking!
