Singer holds on Bruneian roots

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

BEFORE he shot to fame, shy guy Wu Zun claims that no amount of money could tempt him to get up and sing at weddings.
He had to eat his words when he agreed to join Taiwan's latest boy band a move which surprised friends and family as well as himself but certainly one that he will never regret. Born Goh Kiat Chun, the fresh-faced 27-year-old is the first Bruneian to make it big in the Chinese entertainment industry, an achievement made easy with his good looks and talent.
Since his group, Fahrenheit, materialised in early 2006, he has already proven that he can sing, dance, act, and even model and while he is at it, why not win the hearts of millions all over the world over as well?
Fahrenheit, transliterated `Fei Lun Hai' by Chinese-speaking fans, was recently invited to perform for the first time in Hong Kong, alongside big names at all-star concert `Wild Day Out 2006'.
They were greeted at the airport by an impressive turnout of fans, some of whom had followed their idols from Taiwan.
In fact, their popularity has given rise to myriad online fan websites and forums, dedicated to discussing the latest affairs of the Fahrenheit group members and planning for their birthday gifts and outings. One Wikipedia-based artiste database even lists Wu Zun's blood type, weight and shoe size.
However, the ever modest Wu Zun is still coming to terms with his fame. When asked about his most memorable experience so far, he can hardly decide. ``Thousands of people celebrating my birthday with me, the stage experience with many fans singing along as we performance, travelling to meet fans, posing for magazines, filming TV shows, signing thousands of autographs and saying thousands of `thank you's' in a day,'' he rattled off. The group's debut album went on sale in September 2006, and Wu Zun has just completed filming a new romantic comedy series called Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (HanaKimi), his second production based on a Japanese manga. He made his acting debut in comedy series KO One, followed by romantic drama series, Tokyo Juliet.
``Although I love challenges and it's a very exciting life, every day is packed, and time seems so limited for us,'' said Wu Zun. ``We basically eat most of our meals in the car because we have to rush from activity to activity!''
Even so, he still manages to find the time to update fans on his latest exploits, on his blog (www.wretch.cc/blog/wuchun10cool), or take a moment or two to reflect on how much he misses home. ``In Taiwan, the pace of life is a dozen times quicker than in Brunei and everyone works like there is no tomorrow,'' he said. ``Bruneians are very fortunate as Brunei really takes care of its own citizens. They should consider themselves lucky that they are living in such a nice country.''
During his slower-paced days, Wu Zun played basketball for Brunei, and enjoyed a comfortable life, which he attributes to a good upbringing.
But even though he is out of the country, living the life other Bruneians can only dream about, he is not about to let his education go to waste. The singer studied Business Administration at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and was awarded a degree with distinction.
Now he is applying his entrepreneurial skills to his Brunei-based health club, Fitness Zone, and even returns periodically to check on business. ``Fitness Zone's second branch is scheduled to open at Kiulap in January. There are so many things to be prepared, because my aim is to establish professional standards here which are similar to health clubs overseas. I want to encourage Bruneians to lead a healthy lifestyle,'' said Wu Zun.
