Teens FEB issue magazine:
Entertainment => Show Luo Zhi Xiang
No Room For Romanced & Rumours
What talented Taiwanese multi-hyphenate Show Luo really wants to do in 2008 is to concentrate on his career
It¡¯s tough accepting that Show Luo, popularity known as ¡®Xiao Zhu¡¯ to Mandopop fans, is only 28 years old. Few artistes of his generation can boast of experience as extensive as the former child star, who started playing drums when he was three years old and came in second at a singing contest at seven.
But his road to stardom had been far from smooth sailing. After joining ¨C and ¨C splitting from ¨C two boybands, Show shelved his musical ambition and carved out an alternate career as the wacky co-host of variety programme, 100% Entertainment. Occasionally, he also earned rave reviews in TV productions such as Hi Working Girl (opposite Jolin Tsai) and The Outsiders 2 (alongside Dylan Kuo)
Fortunately, he did not completely abandon his first love, music. Since 2003, with the release debut solo album, Showtime, he has been chalking up chart hits and accolades across Asia. His follow-up discs such as Hypnosis Show (2005) and SPESHOW (2006) also opened at No. 1 on Taiwan¡¯s G-music chart respectively.
Show¡¯s latest record, Show Your Dance, was also a chart-topper when it hit the stores in November. Continuing from his favoured musical mix of electronic, dance, hip-hop, R&B and rap, the album features the motor mouth at his finest, thanks to bouncy tracks such as ¡°When We¡¯re Home Together¡±, ¡°Three No¡¯s To Love¡± and lead single ¡°One Man Show¡±. More importantly, it has helped cement his reputation as Mandopop¡¯s Dancing King.
teens: What was the best bit about working on Show Your Dance? Show Luo: It was an enjoyable experience. My favourite track, ironically, is a ballad, ¡°I Don¡¯t Know How To Sing¡±. I love everything about the song, whether it¡¯s the melody written by FIR¡¯s Real, or the lyrics, because it¡¯s so touching. The recording was done in one take. The producer wanted a raw sound and told me he wouldn¡¯t be touching up any bit of it. And I was fine with it.
You are better known for uptempo tracks such as ¡°One Man Show¡± and ¡°When We¡¯re Home Together¡±. Do you reckon the fast songs are easier to tackle? (Earnestly) I think it¡¯s a mistake to assume ballads are more challenging than dance numbers. In fact, it should be the opposite. Singing a fast song means I have to juggle between emotion and attitude, as well as technicalities such as breathing, while I can focus on just the emotion when singing a ballad. That¡¯s not all. When it comes to performing the song, a fast number means I have to sing and dance at the same time, which is very challenging. And the audience is more easily stirred by such a combination. That¡¯s why I derive more satisfaction from singing fast songs.
You attended dance lessons in US to brush up on your moves for ¡°One Man Show¡±. Why did you have to make it so hard on yourself? I didn¡¯t ask to go! My record company thought it was a good opportunity for me to learn new thing so they arranged for the trip. And since I hadn¡¯t been to US, I was curious about the country and the people. I attended a couple of lessons, which I thoroughly enjoyed because I was always soaked in perspiration after every session.
On this album, you also sing a duet, ¡°Lose To You¡±, with Elva Hsiao. Did you warn her about your tendency to become romantically linked to female stars you work with? I don¡¯t know how to describe it, but I think we clicked. Surprisingly, she told me she also felt the same way. I think she is a wonderful girl! But no, I didn¡¯t worry about getting romantically linked to her at all, especially when there¡¯s nothing extraordinary about our relationship. I don¡¯t understand why reporters keep spinning such stories. In any case, I don¡¯t think such relationship rumours are any help to my career, even though I must admit it gives people something to talk about. I feel that an artiste¡¯s success is all about his or her performance, so I have been trying to draw the focus back to where it matters. Such rumours take the focus away from my hard work and effort, and are very frustrating. I sometimes wished I actually had the relationship after all!
Sounds as if you¡¯re yearning to have a relationship. Of course, I would like to have a girlfriend! But I think I¡¯d end up hurting her if I pursue a relationship now. My busy schedule means whatever free time I have is spent on sleeping and resting. The relationship would become a burden for both parties; I¡¯d feel guilty about not being able to be with her while she¡¯d be disappointed that I couldn¡¯t live up to her expectations. I don¡¯t think I could handle all that pressure.
Okay. Let¡¯s get back to work, then. You¡¯re filming upcoming basketball drama, Hot Shot, with Jerry Yan and Wu Zun. Who among the three of you is the best basketball player? We haven¡¯t had a chance to find out. But we have played with one another before. The chemistry between Wu Zun and I is very good, while Jerry and I were on different teams, and the teams never had the chance to play against each other.
It¡¯s said you wanted to drop out of the project between the attention was on Jerry. It¡¯s untrue that we couldn¡¯t get along with one another. We get along fine! When the rumour started, we became very uncomfortable whenever we bumped into one another. I¡¯d be thinking, ¡®is it true that he doesn¡¯t like me?¡¯ But everyone¡¯s very easy-going and I love having new friends. What¡¯s true, however, was that I almost couldn¡¯t make it due to scheduling conflict. But the director thought the role suited me, while I was attracted to the character too. Plus, I¡¯d never worked with Jerry and Wu Zun. Best part is, very few idol dramas have three male leads, so expect the story to be very masculine.
Finally, which track on Show Your Dance best sums up 2007 for you? This is one of my best years ever; everything went so smoothly in 2007. I was very satisfied with my performance and, for the first time in my career, I didn¡¯t have to feel insecure. I¡¯d been working hard for so many years and finally. I could feel a sense of achievement. So I¡¯d choose ¡°One Man Show¡±, because I did well generally. For example, I scored 12 endorsement deals in 2007, which was a record among Taiwanese artistes. So whenever I walked along the streets, I¡¯d see my face plastered all over the shops. One day, a friend and I met was commenting that he had been seeing me everyday ¨C and a bus with my photograph on it drove by as we were talking! It was so embarrassing!

Mmm, but according to this site: starztee.blogspot.com/2008/03/latest-announcement.html , the shop is not opened by Xiao Zhu himself. Just people bringing in the brand to sell in spore... if I'm not wrong, I bet the tees would be very expensive (probably around $50 and above)
